Extended Predictive Minds: do Markov Blankets Matter?
نویسندگان
چکیده
The extended mind thesis claims that a subject’s sometimes encompasses the environmental props subject interacts with while solving cognitive tasks. Recently, debate over has been focused on Markov Blankets: statistical boundaries separating biological systems from environment. Here, I argue such focus is mistaken, because Blankets neither adjudicate, nor help us whether true. To do so, briefly introduce and free energy principle in Section 2. then turn exposition to criticism. In 3, using determine extends will provide an answer based circular reasoning. 4, consider track of mind, answering negative. This resorting yields extensionally inadequate conclusions which violate parity principle. 5, further led sidestep as they make internalism about vacuously A brief concluding paragraph follows.

Selecting Features by Learning Markov Blankets
In this paper I propose a novel feature selection technique based on Bayesian networks. The main idea is to exploit the conditional independencies entailed by Bayesian networks in order to discard features that are not directly relevant for classification tasks. An algorithm for learning Bayesian networks and its use in feature selection are illustrated. The advantages of this algorithm with re...
متن کاملIdentifying Markov Blankets with Decision Tree Induction
The Markov Blanket of a target variable is the minimum conditioning set of variables that makes the target independent of all other variables. Markov Blankets inform feature selection, aid in causal discovery and serve as a basis for scalable methods of constructing Bayesian networks. This paper applies decision tree induction to the task of Markov Blanket identification. Notably, we compare (a...
متن کاملUsing Markov Blankets for Causal Structure Learning
We show how a generic feature-selection algorithm returning strongly relevant variables can be turned into a causal structure-learning algorithm. We prove this under the Faithfulness assumption for the data distribution. In a causal graph, the strongly relevant variables for a node X are its parents, children, and children’s parents (or spouses), also known as the Markov blanket of X . Identify...
متن کاملExtended Markov Random Fields for predictive image segmentation
Since the 1970s, there has been increasing interest in the use of Markov Random Fields (MRFs) as models to aid in the segmentation of noisy or degraded digital images. MRFs can make up for deficiencies in observed information by adding a-priori knowledge to the image interpretation process in the form of models of spatial interaction between neighbouring pixels. In data fusion problems, interac...
متن کاملHospital Corners and Wrapping Patients in Markov Blankets
The American health care system is rife with perverse incentives. Providers are reimbursed for providing more care rather than preventive or higher quality care. Starting in 2012, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) sets Medicare reimbursement rates based on hospital performance for 30day preventable readmissions relative to expectations using 3 specific target diagnoses (AMI, CHF, and PN). This may ...
